Heal A Community?

“…In our war against the Chinese Virus.” -Donald Trump

Chinese medicine is more than just medicine, it is culture, intertwined in Chinese food, customs and remedies. In Canada, Chinese medicine shops are a signature of any cultural shopping space. For some, It is a doorway back to the motherland and for some it is a smelly place that your mom brings you to as a kid. Never the less you can feel the wellness as you inhale the various herbs and sometimes dried lizards. Although once being lively hubs of a vibrant and resilient community, Chinese businesses have suffered great loss in the light of COVID-19. It seems that the virus has not only infected our bodies bit also society with xenophobia and racism. This series of photos are 6 images shot on 35mm film. They focus on cultural spaces and the ‘at risk’ population of COVID-19. Will these century old remedies be able to heal our communities once again?
